Julia was the twin sister of Isabel Constantia Louisa Du Cane. She never married.

Julia attended Oxford (before women were admitted for degrees) and on 2 August 1902 she was awarded a Class III from the Examiners in the Honour School of Modern History per the Oxford University Gazette publication.

She served with the British Red Cross Society Volunteers from November 1918 to March 1919 and her record described her as being a "good worker."

Julia offered the British Museum a small collection of objects from Egypt and Mesopotamia in 1951 (WAA deposit book 25/11/51, entry 592) and presented a second group of Mesopotamian antiquities to The British Museum in 1952, which had been given to her by her maternal uncle by marriage, Sir Austen Henry Layard (q.v.).
