Enid was the sixth child of ten children and the third daughter of Richard Du Cane (1821-1904) and Charlotte Maria Guest (1834-1902). She never married.

Enid, known as Nela within her family was an extensive traveler and was fluent in French, German and Italian. Through her close relationship with her maternal aunt, Lady Enid Layard and uncle, Sir Austen Henry Layard she became a friend and visitor of the Empress Frederick of Germany and her daughters. In June 1908 when she was forty years old, she was described as being "very pretty and picturesque but her hair is quite white in the front." On Jan 3, 1911 it was announced that she had been appointed as Lady In Waiting to Princess Helena Victoria of Great Britain (aka Princess Christian of Schleswig-Holstein) and on May 9, 1911 she was presented at Court for her appointment. Nela died at The Old Rectory, Rotten Row in Lewes, Sussex. Per her will, her Greater London residence was 15 Welbeck House on Wigmore Street, Marylebone, Middlesex.

Enid served with the Y.M.C.A. , entering the France/Flanders theatre of war on 29 October 1916. A photo of two of her service medals sold at auction in 2009 are attached to this memorial.
