DEATH OF MR. R. D. G. DU ANE
Fittleworth has lost its greatest benefactor by the passing of Mr. Richard Dacre Guest Du Cane, of Cater Cross. He died on Sunday, at the age of 78. Mr. Du Cane came to Fittleworth nearly 20 years ago, and he had actively associated himself with the activities of the place, and endeared himself to old and young alike. Memories of the many happy parties he held at Cater Cross for local people, of the treats he gave the villagers there on the occasion of King George V's Jubilee and when the present King's Coronation took place, will linger long in the minds of those who enjoyed them. He founded Fittleworth Bowling Club in 1925, and had been its President since, and he had been Chairman of the Mounteney-Jephson Miniature Rifle Club for 16 years. Indeed, Mr. Du Cane was regarded as the "Father" of the Rifle Club, and was certainly the best friend it has had. Five years ago he had extensions made at the range and electric light installed. He was a keen and liberal supporter of the Cricket and Football Clubs, and was also interested in Fittleworth Sea Rangers, and within the last two years gave the S.R.S. Reliance Crew a dinghy. There are few people in the village to whom he had not been kind and generous in his characteristically unobtrusive way at some time or another.
