Louis was the third child of ten children and the second son of Richard Du Cane (1821-1904) and Charlotte Maria Guest (1834-1902). He was a solicitor and joined his father's law practice in 1897. He never married. His residence in Fittleworth was Fittleworth House with several of his siblings.

FITTLEWORTH LOSES PROMINENT RESIDENT
DEATH OF MR. L. C. DU CANE

Fittleworth has lost a well-known figure by the death of Mr. Louis Charles Du Cane, who died at his home, Fittleworth House, Fittleworth, on Monday. Mr. Du Cane, who was in his 75th year (s/b 74th), and a bachelor, had only been ill a short while. His death followed an operation some few weeks ago.

He was a member of a family well known in Fittleworth, where his brother, Mr. R.D.G. Du Cane, and his sisters also live. Until his retirement a few years ago Mr. Du Cane was a partner in a firm of solicitors. He had lived in Fittleworth since 1918.

He was deeply interested in Red Cross work, and was also a member of the Royal West Sussex Hospital Committee. Since its inception he had also been keenly interested in the West Sussex Golf Club at Pulborough.

Mr. Du Cane was responsible for recent alterations and improvements to Fittleworth Church. In his younger days he had been a colonel in the Post Office Rifles.

A memorial service was held at Fittleworth Church yesterday (Friday) following cremation at Brighton.

The Commandant (Mrs. Woods) and seven members of the Pulborough Detachment of the British Red Cross - Miss D. Knight, Mrs. Watson, Miss Cameron, the Misses L. and I. Allfrey, and Miss E. Langford - attended a memorial service to Mr. Louis Du Cane in Fittleworth Church on Friday. The body was subsequently cremated at Brighton.

Mr. Du Cane who was 74 years of age, took a great interest in the work of the Red Cross and was a member of the Committee of the Royal West Sussex Hospital.
