Combat Organization: 279th Engineers Combat Battalion.

Pvt Howard Hicks had the dangerous job of clearing out mine fields so the infantry could attack in the area. On November 28th, he was helping to deactivate a mine field in advance of the 84th Division and he stepped on a Schu (Shoe) mine and was killed instantly. The location was outside of the town of Beck, Germany.
