F. L. HICKS, 86, NEW HOPE NATIVE, DIES AT LORETTO - A Nelson County native, Francis Leonard Hicks, 86, died at 12:15 a.m., Sunday, March 16, at his residence in Loretto, after a long illness. He was the son of the late Robert and Ludie Davis Hicks and spent most of his life in the New Hope area. He was a carpenter and a farmer, and also had been employed at the Kentucky State Fair. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ethel Mattingly Hicks; five daughters, Mrs. Oscar (Norma) Colvin, Mrs. Paul (Shirley) Allgeier, both of Louisville; Mrs. Philip (Inez) Brown, Cox's Creek; Mrs. Nancy Brian, of Bardstown, and Mrs. Shirley (Dorothy) Porter, of New Hope; three sons, Jesse Hicks, Dayton, Ohio; Ernest Hicks, Louisville, and Fred Hicks, New Hope; three brothers, Oscar Hicks, Bardstown; Arthur and Ellis Hicks of Holy Cross; a sister, Mrs. Bernard Newton of Shepherdsville; 35 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. Another son was killed in action while serving in the European Theater during World War II. Funeral Mass was offered at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 18, at St. Francis of Assisi Church, St. Francis, with the Rev. Joseph I. Dawson, officiating. Burial was in St. Vincent dePaul Cemetery, New Hope. Pallbearers were Charles, Ben, Ted and Joe Hicks, Mike Porter and Danny Brown. The body was at Mattingly Funeral Home, Loretto, where prayers were recited at 7:30 Tuesday evening.
