She was born in January 1907 as Clara Evelyn Leep and is the fourth of six children born in Chicago, daughter of the Dutch couple Edward Leep (29 y) and Jenny De Vries, who married in 1902 in Chicago. The family lived in April 1910 at a farm in the Roseland and Calumet area in the southern part of Chicago, ward 32.

The Leep families moved in 1911 from Chicago to Canada and settled in the tiny Dutch community of Cramersburg, in the southwestern part of the of southern central Canadian province Saskatchewan, five miles south of the river with the same name and about 10 miles north of Abbey. In 1923 Clara's family had to leave Cramersburg because of animal diseases, coldness, grasshopper invasions, drought, dust bowls, several successive crop failures and low grain prices and moved to the Dutch gardeners settlement Highland, Lake County, in the northwestern part of Indiana, adjacent to Cook County and Chicago in Illinois.

Her mother Jennie alias Katie died in 1924 at the age of about 45 years, likely in or near Lansing, Illinois, about 6 miles west of Highland, Lake County, Indiana.

In May 1940 Clara (33 y), her husband Ralph V. Pettit (29 y, born in Indiana, proprietor of a sheet metal shop), their children Sharon (3 y, Indiana) and Waymond (0, Indiana) at an own home, worth $6000, in Highland Town, Richards Street, North Township, Lake County, Indiana. Clara and Ralph lived in 1935 at the same place.

Her husband Ralph Pettit died in 1994 in Lake County, Indiana at the age of 83 years, Clara in 2008 in Highland, Lake County at the age of 101 years.
