When Jacobus was 15 years old he registered as a student of literature at Leiden. After graduation he became Mayor and Secretary of 's Gravenzande. He married April 9, 1824, at Zutphen, Netherlands to Sara Jacoba Hester Nederburgh. He was also a notary and kept all of these offices until his death at the family estate "Ouwendijck." Was father of nine children. of which several died young.
