At sixteen years, he registered as a student of literature and again at age 20 years. He did not finish his academic studies, but became a naval cadet 1st class of the Royal Navy. After leaving the Navy he returned to Leiden where he became a member of the Council, member of Chamber of Commerce and Chief Inspector of Dikes of Rhineland and also was the co-owner of the Salt Works first purchased by his grandfather. From 1851 he was a member of the House of Representatives. He also became well known for his Memories of the Rights of the City of Leiden in 1844.
