Herman aside from being the wealthy son of California Pioneers was also an artist. He was born at the family estate in Netherlands, called "Ouwendijk" s'Gravenzande. He was a seaman passing his examination for chief mate. In 1854 he went to Elk-River near Port Oxford in Southern Oregon where he became a farmer. He eventually moved back to California.He painted the portrait of one of the first California governors which hung for years in the Oakland Museum. Herman also kept many diaries, which are at the Bancroft Library, University of California, at Berkeley, California, of his first years in California mining for gold. Herman left a substantial estate to his children and wife, Mary Ellen Thornton de Fremery.

Herman S. De Fremery, a brother of J. De Fremery, died this morning at his residence in Alameda, of Hemorrhage of the lungs. He was 55 years of age, and a native of Holland."
