Very intelligent man. Went to University of California, Berkeley, belong to Beta Theta Pi and earned the coveted Fy-Bate Key for academics. Went to MIT and graduated in 1915 in mechanical engineering. Attended Naval Academy of Annapolis. Was an Ensign in the Navy in World War I. After the war, he joined the Union Ice Company, retiring after 35 years in 1954.

Donald married Helen Campbell, June 27, 1936, at Oakland, California. No children were born to the marriage. When they were older they lived in a beautiful retirement home in Portola Valley, Santa Clara, California.
