He was born east of Brunswick on September 25, 1899, the son of Albert A. and Lena Munson Grotjan. Growing up in the vicinity of Dalton, he attended the country schools near there. He left in early manhood to find employment in Kansas City. After several months there, he moved to Decatur, Illinois, where he worked for the A. E. Staley Co. for a period of 24 years, 4 years for the Post Office Dept. and during the past seven years was employed by the Illinois Railroad Terminal Co.
He was married to Miss Zelma Beall in May of 1922. To this union were born three sons: Leo Douglas, Albert Leroy and Lonnie Lee, all of whom survive.
On October 9, 1948, he was married to Miss Grace Sparks.
He lost an older brother, Alonzo C. (Lon) Grotjan on December 28, 1938.
He leaves to mourn his loss his wife, Grace, his three sons and five grandchildren, all of Decatur.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, February 10 at 3:00 p.m. in the J. J. Moran and Sons Funeral Home in Decatur, conducted by the Lutheran minister. Interment was in Graceland Cemetery.
Mr. Grotjan was well known in the communities of Dalton, Keytesville and Brunswick and leaves a host of relatives and friends in Chariton County.
