Gerrit John Te Slaa was born August 31, 1857 at Aalten, Prov. Gelderland, Netherlands and was from a family of nine brothers and one sister.
He was married on September 2nd, 1875 to Johanna Gertruide Kruisselbrink. They came to the United States in the year 1893. The first eight years they lived southwest of Sioux Center on the farm. In the year 1901 they moved to a farm southwest of Hull. On this farm they lived for 22 years. In the year 1923 they moved to Hull.
Mr. and Mrs. Te Slaa had eleven children. One died in infancy in Holland. They came to the United States with eight children, the two youngest being born in the United States. Two of the children died in this country, Johanna, the wife of E. D. Ver Meer, died at the age of 28 years, in 1905, and Gerrit, who died at the age of 19, in 1911. The living children are Henry Te Slaa, John Te Slaa, Mrs. Jake W. Ver Meer, Mrs. Harry Miersma, Mrs. Lammert Kooiker and Mrs. James Vander Schaaf (twins), Mrs. John D. Hospers, Wm. Te Slaa all of Hull. There are also 37 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.
Mr. Te Slaa was a member of the First Reformed church and served this church elder for many years. He was also teacher for Bible classed in two schools for many years. His trade was that of a carpenter and he followed this work for over 40 years.
Besides his wife and children he is also survived by three brothers, two residing in the old country and Mr. B. Te Slaa of Hull.
