SON'S INTERVIEW 1875:

In 1875 Robert's son Thomas Warren White or T. Warren, did and interview

for a Newspaper in Cartersville GA, where he was living at the time:

"Cartersville, Georgia,

"Standard and Express",

May 13, 1875, Page 3:

"Our esteemed fellow-citizen, T. Warren White, stopped a few minutes to chat with us, on Monday last. He informed us that he had just received a letter from his father, who lives near Spartanburg, S. C., and who is now beyond his ninety-first year. The late cyclone in that section of country struck the old gentleman's place and did considerable damage. It blew down two very large trees upon his house, crushing and destroying it.

His barn was completely demolished, his carriage and buggy were broken

so as to be useless. The old gentleman says he cannot work as well as he

could some thirty years ago, and feels the loss of the property ruined by

the wind. When he was ninety-one years old he laid the worm of a rail fence

some several hundred yards long."

"Mr. White's grandfather was also a vigorous veteran. He was a blacksmith, and on his 100th birthday took a pick in his hand, walked a mile to a shop

and worked a piece of steel on its point. He returned home (on foot) with

the pick, and throwing it upon the ground remarked "there, who of you can

do that when you are a century old?" We doubt if there are many as vigorous

old gentlemen."

** END OF INTERVIEW

**Note:

"Mr White's grandfather was 'ALSO' a vigorous veteran...".

This could ALSO mean that Robert Jr was a veteran, most likely

in the War of 1812, their were a bunch of ROBERT'S from Union

and Spartanburg that served in this war, I have not determined

if any them were our Robt. Jr. Someone marked him as a

veteran on this memorial... I will leave it as is...

CENSUS YEARS RECORDED:

Robert White Jr., is recorded on the Spartanburg Co SC Census years

1820 to 1870, he died before the 1880 census was completed. Note that

the 1820 census he is living next door to his life long friend, J W Cooper,

or James W Cooper, on this census Robert Jr is shown as Robt Wyatte.

The 1840 has never been found for any of our White's in Spartanburg.

1870 LETTER BY DAUGHTER NANCY:

In a letter by Robt Jr's daughter Nancy White Murphy in 1870's she describes to

Edy D. Murphy Jackson, where her father is living, "Father White lives his upper

plantation near Thompsons cross roads is well."

ROBERT JR'S ESTATE RECORD:

"Robert Estate record:

The estate was filed April 3rd 1882

Recorded in book: F Page 125, May 7th 1883.

Clerk of Court of Common

of Robert White Decd.

(Spartanburg County SC)"

I believe there is an Estate record for our Robert Jr., however, there is a court appointed Administrator, and names no children, wife or family, says this ROBERT WHITE died in 1880, there is no Distribution or Administration Bonds that I have found yet or what they sold. In my opinion he out lived most of his family and friends.

DEATH OF ROBT. JR RECORDED IN MINUTES OF HIS CHURCH & OBIT:

His death is recorded at his church, Cedar Springs Baptist, in Spartanburg Co SC, and his Obituary was printed in the Carolina Spartan as well as the Christian Index (Sep 9, 1880 p6 col 3):

OBITUARY

"Carolina Spartan - dated: 5/26/1880 Page 2"

Robert's Obituary reads as follows:

"ROBERT WHITE, who died at his residence near Cedar Springs, in Spartanburg County, on the 17th day of February last, deserves a worthier tribute to his memory, than the writer of this short sketch is capable of giving.

He was born in Union County, then District, [Error NC], then District, on the ---day of ----, 1784. [16 Mar], and was in his ninety-sixth year when he died. When a youth he united with the Padgett Creek church in his native District. In 1815 [1818] he moved to Spartanburg district and settled near Cedar Springs where he continued to reside until the day of his death. On moving to his new home he at once changed his membership to the church at that place. In 1821 he was elected a deacon of Cedar Springs church, which office he retained, and by his Christian conduct adorned the balance of his life - thus continuing for fifty-nine years a deacon of the church where he was ordained.

"His most distinguishing characteristics were his earnest Christian piety and his devotion to duty. During his long life his seat was never once vacant when service was held in his church, unless physically disabled, or kept away by some family affliction which rarely happened, in cold, heat, in rain or sunshine, his pastor could always rely upon the encouragement of his presence. He loved his church and all its ordinances.

"The Sabbath-school, too, was his delight. His modesty and distrust of his own merit were so great that he could never be prevailed upon to take a class, yet he was punctual and constant attendant.

"Unwilling to assume the responsibility of a teacher he was always anxious to be a learner. And as in church so in Sunday-school, if his seat was vacant, it was a subject of remark and it was at once known that he was either sick or that something unusual had transpired in his family. The end of such a man could be nothing less than perfect peace, and though dead he yet speaketh in the impress he has left upon others.

"Happy the man who like ROBERT WHITE can, when he comes to die, look back upon a life where youth, manhood, and old age had been spent in doing all the good he could in the sphere in which he lived and labored.

"The rich fragrance which lingers around a life thus spent will long rise, like precious incense, to shed its blessings upon all around."

===============================================

A Friend
