The oldest daughter of the late Joseph Henry "Oose" and Florrie Richardson Roberts, she was the widow of Lonzie Coates (married in 1940). At the time of her death, she was the oldest member of Wampee Baptist Church. She was a member of the North Strand Senior Center. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by brothers, Archie and Lonnie Roberts; and four sisters, Elouise James, Ethel Roberts McCormick, Pauline Cook and Thelma Hazelton Hart. She was survived by sons, Joseph L. Coates and his wife Joan, John Emory Coates and Billy Coates; one grandson, Joseph L. Coates, Jr.; sisters, Allene Singleton, Pearl Martin and her husband Rev. Wilbur Martin, and Naomi Blevins and her husband Douglas. Her funeral was held February 3, 2009, at the Wampee Baptist Church with The Rev. Michael Vipperman officiating.
