Throughout their lives, Claudia and Joe have been faithful and active members of their church family, and were both Sunday school teachers for much of their lives.
Claudia was 2nd in her high school class (salutatorian) at Marshall High School in 1952; and she remained engaged with other members of her high school class throughout much of her subsequent life. She entered the teaching profession, teaching in Asheville City Schools, Jefferson County Schools (Tennessee), Haywood County Schools (Bethel School in Canton, NC), and Buncombe County Schools (West Buncombe and Emma Elementary Schools) over the course of her career. Following her retirement from teaching, Claudia guided school tours on the Biltmore Estate for several years. She remained an active supporter of education and learning at all levels throughout her life.
Throughout her life, Claudia's true loves were her family and extending its hospitality to embrace others. Over the course of her marriage, of 65 years, to Joe, they opened their home to a niece, Kate Welch Martin, and to Mae Thomas Levy, who provided care to Claudia as she underwent chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer. Claudia deeply valued education and learning, and supported others who devoted their lives to teaching and other caring professions.
