Found Dead In Bed
Edwin McKain was found dead in his bed, Monday afternoon, by his son, Jesse, who went to his father's home to get his laundry. The time of his death was fixed at about ten o'clock Sunday evening, after he had retired, thus having been dead 12 to 15 hours when found. Mr. McKain had made his home in the southeast part of Delphos for some time, since the death of his wife a few years ago, and his children took splendid care of him, looking after him in every way. He had been in his usual health just previous to his death, which was attributed to heart disease.
Edwin Marcus McKain, son of Cyrus and Eliza McKain, was born at Columbus Junction, Iowa, Nov. 13, 1864, and passed away at his home in Delphos, Kansas, May 22nd, 1939, at the age of 74 years, six months and nine days.
In 1872, he came with his parents to Kansas, and they settled on a homestead in Cloud County. He had lived in various places in central and eastern Kansas for the past 67 years.
On Feb. 7, 1889, he was united in marriage to Miss Alice Lavering, who passed away on Dec. 22, 1929. To this union, eleven children were born, ten boys and one girl. Two sons preceded him in death, Adelbert, who died in infancy, and Ernest, who died March 25th, 1936. He leaves to mourn his sudden death, his children: Ross, of Glasco, Eugene, Jess, Everett, and Virgil of Delphos; Wesley, of Tescott, Archie and Clyde, of Minneapolis, and Mrs. Jennie Dewey, of Delphos. Besides his children, there are 17 grandchildren; four brothers, Will and Jake McKain, of Independence, Kansas, Ollie, of Borger, Texas; George, of Garber, Okla., and three sisters: Mrs. Anna Zahn, of Salina, Mrs. Ida Chartier of Miltonvale, and Mrs. Lizzie Cool, of Delphos, and a number of other relatives and friends.
It may be strange – yet, who would change
Time's course to slower speeding,
When one by one our friends have gone,
And left our bosoms bleeding?
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J.A. McClellan at the Delphos Methodist Church, Wednesday, May 24, at 2:30. Interment was in the Delphos Cemetery.
The singers were from the Lamar Methodist Church, and were Mrs. Loris Motter, Mrs. Evan Cooper, Reuben Thomas, and Robert Stewart, with Mrs. Thomas at the piano.
Pallbearers were: Albert Santner, Hiram Barnes, Jake Kline, James haley, Archie Rice and M.A. Philipson. Roy Hartley, funeral director.
