John Peter was born on April 18, 1937, on a farm northeast of Hull, the son of Peter and Cynthia (Te Slaa) Kroese. He was raised on his family's farm and attended the Hull Christian School.
On June 10, 1958, he was united in marriage to Joyce Darlene Warntjes in Boyden. They made their home on his family's farm, where they raised their three daughters. In 2002, after having lived on the farm for 62 years, he and Joyce moved to a house in Hull. He enjoyed being a farmer, and after retiring, he worked part-time for the Farmer's Coop Elevator and Cuperus Construction, both in Hull.
Mr. Kroese was a member and former elder of the First Christian Reformed Church in Hull. He also served several terms on the Farmer's Coop Society board of directors. He enjoyed playing pool and golfing as well as riding his motorcycle, which he and Joyce rode together to all of the lower 48 states. Later in life, he liked to ride his scooter around town, often taking it to have coffee at the Cenex Station.
Survivors include his wife of more than 65 years, Joyce, of Hull; three daughters and their husbands, Cindy and Leon Franken, of Rock Valley; Sharla and Loren Dykshorn, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Barb and Joel Gardes, of Bancroft, Nebraska; five grandchildren, Tyler Franken, and his wife, Katie; Carson Gardes and Cali Gardes; Ross Dykshorn, and Autumn, and her husband, Peter Baudhuin; five great-grandchildren, Emberlynn and Attleigh Franken; and Tony, Penny, and Josie Baudhuin; two sisters-in-law, Darlene Kroese, of Hull; and Judy Warntjes, of Rock Valley; and two brothers-in-law and their wives, Wayne and Susan Warntjes, of Royse City, Texas; and Mark and Cindy Warntjes, of Boyden; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by Joyce's parents, Walter and Esther Warntjes; three sisters, Freda, at the age of six; Hilda, and her husband, Tom De Jong; and Freda, and her husband, Harold Klay; a brother, Charles Kroese; a brother-in-law and his wife, Adrian and Pat Warntjes; three nephews, Glen De Jong, Dwayne De Jong, and Todd Warntjes; and a niece, Mariah Warntjes.
Memorials will be given to the Western Christian High School in Hull and the Ireton Christian School.
