Leicester - Russell Lowell Wells, 76, of 419 N. Turkey Creek Road, Leicester, died Saturday, Nov. 22, 2003, at Hospice Solace Center.
A native of Buncombe County, he was a son of the late Commodore and Addie Israel Wells and was also preceded in death by two sisters, Bonnie Woody and Pearl Ingle and two brothers, Zeb Wells and Walter Wells. He was a dairy farmer and was also employed by Groce Funeral Home for 15 years and by Taylor Instrument Company for 15 years. Mr. Wells was a member and trustee of Beulah Baptist Church where he served on the Cemetery Committee and was a member of the Adult Bible Class. He was an Army Veteran of Korea. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Argylle King Wells; very special friends, Tricia and William Redden and their two sons, Patrick and Preston; three sisters, Maude Sharpe of Leicester, Edna Ditter of Lenoir and Mae Freeman of Leicester; a brother, James Wells of Leicester and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Revs. Dan Stephenson, Phillip Freeman and Claude Surrett officiating. Military graveside rites will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by the Erwin High School Army JROTC. Pallbearers will include David Sharpe, Weaver Wells, J.B. Woody, Larry Jones, William Redden, Dan Weaver, Patrick Redden and Preston Redden.
