A native of Buncombe County, he was a son of the late Commadore and Addie Israel Wells. He was retired from the U.S. Army where he served during WWII and was a member of Newfound Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Virginia "Ginger" Robison Wells who passed away in 1999, two sisters, Pearl Ingle and Bonnie Woody and brothers Walter, Zeb and Russell Wells.
Surviving are his son, Dr. Gary Wells and wife Anne of Seneca, SC; a daughter, Billie Ray Wells of Asheville; three sisters, Maude Sharpe and Mae Freeman of Leicester and Edna Detter of Sanford, NC and two grandchildren, Dr. Jimmy Wells and wife Elizabeth of Houston, TX and Vanessa Delarca of Asheville.
Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
