He was a veteran of World War I and had once worked for the Barnum & Bailey Circus.
At the time of his death, he was survived by a daughter, Billie Gail Atwell, and three sons, Paul, John, and Walter Rice, all of Asheville, a sister, Cora Lewis of Jonesboro, TN; and his twin brother Walter Rice, also of Bay Pines, FL.
His funeral was held on Tuesday, February 3, 1987, graveside at Ramsey Cemetery.
