Janie was the oldest daughter of Jesse Rice & Margaret Messer Rice Clark Hensley, and the wife of N. Garfield Hollifield, to whom she was married on April 11, 1903 in Buncombe County, NC, by F.P. Wyatt.

Date of death is estimated to be after September 1918 through 1919 based on family information; no death certificate has been located for her. Her husband Garfield's World War I draft registration card dated September 12, 1918 listed Janie Hollifield as his nearest relative and their place of residence as Rt. 1, Mars Hill in Madison County, NC.

The 1920 Census, enumerated on January 10, 1920, has Garfield and his children living with his parents on Biltmore Road in Asheville, NC, and he is classified as a widower.

Their children who were listed in the 1920 Census with Garfield are as follows:

Fred W Hollifield age 15
Clifford Hollifield age 12
Pearl Hollifield age 9
Jerry L Hollifield age 7
Tilman Hollifield age 5
Maybelle Hollifield age 3

Relative has been to this cemetery and located what they believed was the grave in July 2011, based on the Janie H found on the headstone. A visit to the site in October 2015 showed the entire cemetery is closed off with a fence and is now completely overgrown and inaccessible without major removal of underbrush.

Brother Ralph Rice was living with Janie in Madison County when he died of TB as a teenager. No death certificate has been located for him either. His grave has also been seen in this cemetery prior to it becoming inaccessible.

Twin brothers Willie and Walter Rice are also buried in this cemetery, in graves with VA markers. Photos to be available soon.
