Nicholas is the first of five children, named for his grandfather Klaas (Nicholas) Leep, born in 1912 in the Dutch truck farmers settlement Roseland in the Southern part of Chicago.
Nicholas' family Leep moved in 1917 to his uncles and grandmother Leep in the former Dutch settlement Cramersburg in the southwestern part of the Canadian southern and central province Saskatshewan. In 1920 they moved to East Martin, Allegan County, in the western part of Michigan.
In 1930 Nichalos (18 y), his father David Leep (43 y), his mother Fannie (41 y), his siblings Henry (16 y, Illinois), Anton Leep (14 y, Illinois), Elizabeth (11 y, Canada) and Martin (7 y, Illinois) resided in Martin, Allegan County, Michigan, about 20 miles south of Grand Rapids. The family of his uncle Duke Leep was living there too.
Farmer Nicholas, residing in Shelbyville, Allegan County, married on 30 November 1934 in Holland, Ottawa County, in the western part of Michigan too at the age of 22 years to the one year older Henrietta Medendorp, who was residing in Martin, Allegan County.
In April 1940 Nick Leep (28 y, salesman), his wife Henrietta (28 y), their children David Leep (4 y), Joyce (3 y), Jean (3 y) and Elizabeth (4 months) lived at a rented home in Marshall City, seat of Calhoun County, in the southwestern part of Michigan. In 1935 Nick and Henrietta lived in Martin, Allegan County, Michigan.
