He was born in 1884 as Hendrik Leep in Sint Annaparochie, the largest village of municipality Het Bildt, in the northwestern part of the Dutch northern province Friesland, the fifth of eight children of shopkeeper Klaas Leep and Klaaske Prins, who had seven sons and one daughter. Hendrik is probably named for un uncle.

His two oldest brothers, laborers Anne and Bertus Leep, arrived on 31 May 1893 at the age of 18 and 16 years on the SS Maasdam at New york, Ellis Island. Their destination is Chicago. Hendrik (11 y), his father, carpenter Klaas Leep (47), mother Klaaske (46), his siblings Haring (16), Janke (13), Douwe (9) and Doeke (7) arrived on 15 August 1896 at New York, on the SS Maasdam too. Their destination is Kensington; very probably is meant the station and neighborhood of Kensington in the southern part of Chicago.

In 1900 Henry (15 y), his father Klass Leep (51 y), his mother Clara (51 y), his siblings Oscar (24 y), Harry (21 y), Jennie (18 y), David (14 y) and Duco (11 y) resided in Calumet Township, Chicago city, Ward 31, Cook County, Illinois.

Henry Leep married on 16 December 1909 in Chicago at the age of 25 years to the five years younger Clara Dykstra, also born in Friesland, in the country village Sexbierum, not faraway from Sint Annaparochie.

In 1910 Henry Leep (26 y) lived with his wife Clara (21 y) in Chicago, Ward 32.

From 1917 until 1920 they lived with Henry's brothers in or near the former, tiny Dutch settlement Cramersburg in the southwestern part of the Canadian south central province Saskewatchan. From Canada Henry went back to Chicago, where he engaged in the gardening business on a modest scale.

In 1920 Henry Leep (35 y), his wife Clara (31 y), their son Nickles Leep (1 y, 7 m, born in Illinois) and his mother Clara Leep (70 y) resided in Calumet Township, Chicago, Ward 32, Cook County, Illinois.

But whereas Henry now was the only one of the five brothers living in Chicago and whereas the ties of blood have ever asserted themselves strongly in their family, he moved in 1924 to Michigan where three of the brothers lived. For a few years he operated a chicken farm, and after that he was employed in a furniture factory where he worked until he retired, his retirement being somewhat hastened by the illness of his wife Clara.

in 1930 Henry Leep (46 y), his wife Clara (41 Y) and their son Nicholas (11 y) lived in the Dutch settlement Zeeland, Ottawa County, in the western part of Michigan, to which they moved in 1924.

In April 1940 Henry Leep (53 y, janitor at a private school), his wife Clara (51 y) and their son Nicholas (21 y, born in Illinois, sander (?) in a clock factory) lived at an own home, worth $2500, in Zeeland City, West Main Street, Ottawa County, in the western part of Michigan. They lived in 1935 in the same house.

From about 1943 on they lived in the city of Holland, another Dutch settlement, not faraway from Zeeland. His wife died there in 1958 in hospital at the age of 69 years. Henry moved later on probably to relatives in Lake County, Indiana, adjacent to Cook County and Chicago in Illinois, where he died in 1965 at the age of 81 years.
