Samuel Maxam (aka Maxham/ Muxom/ Muxham/ Musham) was born on 12 September 1748 in Rochester, Plymouth County, Massachusetts Colony. Samuel was one of at least seven children born to Samuel Maxam and Elizabeth Gibbs. On 17 May 1777, Samuel married Margaret Lucas. Samuel and Margaret had at least eight children.
Samuel Maxam "was a veteran of the Revolution, having enlisted three times, twice in a Massachusetts regiment and once in a company of Connecticut volunteers." He was "a private under Capt. Isaac Wood at the siege of Boston, and with Capt. Joseph Parker in Rhode Island. He turned out at various alarms and, 1778, was corporal in Capt. Job Pierce's company."
In the first U.S. Federal Census of 1790 for Middleborough, MA, there are eight people in the household of Samuel Muxham: one free white male 16 and over—Samuel himself; four free white males under sixteen (sons Asabel, James, William, and Samuel Jr.); and three free white females, including Margaret and daughters Susanna and Mary).
Margaret Lucas Maxam appears to have died in 1792. On or after 16 November 1793, in Middleborough, Samuel married Bathsheba Pratt. Samuel and Bathsheba had at least three children: Hannah, Bathsheba, and Ezra.
In the 1800 U.S. Federal Census for Middleborough, MA, there are nine people in the household of Samuel Muxson: Samuel himself, in the category "Age 45 and above"; one female in that same age category, presumably Bathsheba; two females under ten (Hannah and Bathsheba); one male, aged 15-45; two males, aged 10-15; and two males, under age ten.
Mysteriously, Samuel Maxam and his family are not found in the U.S. Federal Census of 1810 for Middleborough. By 1810, Samuel's son William had moved to Jefferson County, New York, where he married Martha Tiffany.
In the 1820 U.S. Federal Census for Middleborough (20 October), Samuel Maxham is listed: in his household are himself, one female, 45 or above (Bathsheba?), one male, 10-16, and one male, 16-26 (Ezra?). There is one person in the household engaged in agriculture: it's not clear if this one person is Samuel himself or perhaps Ezra.
Samuel Maxam died in Middleborough, MA, on 6 December 1820, and is buried in South Middleboro Cemetery.
