A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Shippensburg, Cumberland County, August 4, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 10 as a private with Co. D, 130th Pennsylvania Infantry. He deserted the day after the battle of Antietam, pleading deafness of the left ear due to typhoid fever. Authorities arrested him in Pennsylvania on December 31, 1863, and assigned him without trial to Co. D, 79th Pennsylvania Infantry, to complete his term of service. He also forfeited pay to cover all arrest costs but was honorably discharged at term's end September 5, 1864, at Jonesboro, Georgia.
He married Adaline Ingram June 15, 1866, in Orrstown, Franklin County, and fathered John (b. @1867), Mary (b. @1869), Elle (b. 04/01/73), Alice Ann (b. 08/08/75), George Wilson (b. 10/06/81), Isaac (b. 04/15/83), and Neilford or Milford (b. 04/30/85).
When the pension office for some reason used "A" as his middle initial in correspondence, Samuel irately notified them that he had no middle name and therefore no middle initial and that they should cease using "A" so his mail doesn't go to some other Samuel Bowermaster Death came as a result of stomach cancer.∼Mt. Holly Springs, Dec. 1 - Samuel Bowermaster, after a lingering illness of over two years with cancer of the stomach, died at his home on Mill street early on Wednesday morning. He was 58 years old. The deceased was a veteran of the civil war going into service September 1861 and serving his country until September 1864. He is survived by a wife and six children, three boys and three girls. The funeral services were held this morning at 8 o'clock. Interment was made at Cleversburg, Pa.
