Oscar Otto Grotjan was born on Oct 7, 1865 one of ten children of Louis and Marie Grotjan.  His siblings were Will Henry (1854), Lee (1855), Henry (1858), Lena (1859), Albert (1863), Lydia (1867), George (1868) Minnie (1870) and Till (1870). 

He married Minnie Munson and the two celebrated 64 years of marriage together.  
Three Grotjan brothers including Oscar married three Munson daughters. The Munson Grotjan wives were the granddaughters of John Henry Munson whose daughter Caroline was the first wife of Louis Grotjan the boys father. Caroline died in childbirth.

Oscar was a very prosperous farmer raising stock and tobacco.  In the 1920’s the family founded the Grotjan Cut Off a recreational area at the Dalton Cut Off. His son Earl Grotjan, RD McCurry (Earl’s best friend) and Grover Coleman were caretakers. Oscar Grotjan was a good carpenter and boat builder. He built four cabins to rent and one for soft drinks and dancing. A Delco light building furnished all the lights. There was an ice house on the creek where the caretakers put up ice for the winter. Oscar built all the skifts together with a boat house which was used by ladies to change clothes. Earl and RD kept an old victrola wound up and changed the records. Customers mostly came from Moberly and Kansas City. One regular customer was H.K. Lueier Prosecuting Attorney in Kansas City who stayed for two months each year. H.K. enjoyed fried chicken and fresh fish from the lake. Oscar also made swings, merry go rounds, tables and benches for the resort. At his death each of his grandchildren received a sizeable farm.   

He was a member of the Dalton Methodist Church.  

The family suffered numerous tragedies. Daughter Minnie died at 4 months old on Dec 26. Daughter Elva was widowed after 1 year of marriage, and then died of ovarian cancer at 41. Daughter in law Mabel suffered severe burns and died while using a gas-powered iron. Son Hobart died in a car accident. And son Earl was killed while hunting rabbits when he was 20.

Oscar died November 10, 1960.

Oscan O. Grotjan spent his boyhood on his father's farm in Bowling Green township and was educated in the disctrict schools. He has always ben interested in stock raising and for many years was among the leading stockmen of Chariton County. Mr. Grotjan also raised tobacco extensively. He is now living retired at Dalton.

Oscar Grotjan is a Republican and a member of the Methodist Church. He is a substantial citizen of Chariton County and is highly respected.
