Belgian Royalty. Born Stéphanie Clothilde Louise Hermine Maria Charlotte at Chateau de Laiken in Brussels, Belgium, the daughter of Marie Henriette von Österreich, Archduchess of Austria and Leopold II of Belgium, and was known as Princesse Stéphanie de Belgique. After the separation of her parents, she and her sister were largely ignored, their education neglected, which only worsened after the death of her brother. In March 1880, Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria was invited to the Belgian court at the insistence of Leopold II. An engagement was agreed upon, but had to be postponed as the prospective bride had not yet reached puberty. On 10 May 1881, just prior to her 17th birthday, she married Rudolf in Saint Augustine's Church, Vienna. Their only child, Archduchess Elisabeth Marie Henriette Stephanie Gisela, was born at Laxenburg Castle in September 1883. The marriage eventually collapsed amidst many infidelities. In 1889, her husband was found shot to death in Mayerling along with his mistress, resulting in a monumental scandal. Widowed and disliked by her mother-in-law, she traveled from court, leaving her daughter with governesses. She met Elemér Lónyay de Nagy-Lónya et Vásáros-Namény, a very minor Hungarian count, in March 1900, and they married. The couple settled on his estate, Oroszvár - Rusovce (today Slovakia). In 1917, he was elevated to the rank of Fürst by the Emperor of Austria. In 1935, she attempted to publish her memoirs, but ensuing scandal led to the government forbidding distribution. The work was eventually published outside of Austria as 'Ich Sollte Kaiserin Werden' (I Was To Be Empress). In 1945, the advancing Red Army forced her to flee the estate. She found sanctuary in the abbey of Pannonhalma, near Györszentmárton, Hungary where she died at age 81.
