He was the younger of two sons born to Leopold II, King of the Belgians, by his second wife and former mistress, Blanche Zélia Joséphine Delacroix, Baronesse de Vaughan, born before their marriage. He was informally granted the title of Count of Ravenstein by his father; a title which was not recognized by his father's successors. He took the surname of his mother's second husband, Antoine Emmanuel Durrieux.
