In 1860, he was a farmer living with his parents in Greenwood Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Perry County October 21, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg November 2 as a corporal with Co. E, 173rd Pennsylvania
Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company August 17, 1863.
