Governor. George Maclean was a soldier who served twice as the Governor of Gold Coast (now Ghana). Maclean served as an ensign in the British Army, serving with the 27th (Inniskilling) Regiment of Foot before being placed with the 91st (Argyllshire Highlanders) Regiment of Foot. Due to his health he left his position with the army and joined the Royal African Colonial Corps, stationed in British West Africa. In 1830 he became Governor of Gold Coast and remained in the position until 1836. In 1838 he took up the position again, serving for a further five years. In 1842, an investigation into Maclean's activities in the Gold Coast. It was found he had imprisoned over ninety locals on unfair grounds, some for periods of more than four years. He was the husband of poet Letitia E. Landon.
