JAMES MACLEAN, born 1758, second 1825 son of James M of Pitmain, cadet of Achot, and Isobel Fordyce, and brother of Lieut.-General Sir John M.; educated at King's College, Aberdeen ; M.A. (20th March 1776); licen. by Presb. of Abernethy in 1794; ord. by Presb. of Abernethy same year ; adm. to Keith 14th Jan. 1795 ; pres. by the trustees of James, Earl Fife, before 26th Jan., trans, and adm. 24th March 1825; died 24th Nov. 1840, " a pious and highly esteemed divine".
He married:
(1) 7th May 1789, ELIZABETH (died 3rd April 1816), daugh. of George Tod, Stankhouse, Birnie, and had issue:
Helen, born 6th June 1790, died 13th April 1807 ;
Isobel, born 9th June 1792, died 21st Aug. 1801 ;
Elizabeth, born 12th Oct. 1794, died 26th Oct. 1817;
Charlotte, born 14th Aug. 1796, died 16th Feb. 1816;
John, born 4th June 1798, died 25th June 1822;
George, Governor of Cape Coast Castle, Africa, born 24th Feb. 1801, died at Cape Coast Castle in 1847 [he marr. 7th June 1838, Letitia Elizabeth Landon, poetess and romancist (1802-1838), famous in her day under the initials "L.E.L";
Hugh of Westfield, surgeon H.E.I.C.S., born 5th Dec. 1803, died at Hythhill, Elgin, 1885 ;
Isobel, born 9th Aug. 1805, died 27th May 1827 :
(2) 15th May 1819, ELIZABETH (died 25th Jan. 1851, aged 75), daugh. of William Tod, factor to the Duke of Gordon and widow of Alexander Gordon, Jamaica, and had issue:
James, captain of Coast Guard, Cape Coast Castle, afterwards farmer, St Martin s, Ross-shire, born 25th March 1820, died 1877.
