Wife of Humphrey Trent, and mother of Clarissa Trent Ellis Christian, Smith Trent, Alex Trent, and Eli Trent.

Humphrey and Mattie raised their family on Gilbert Creek, near present day Gilbert, WV. She died sometime after the 1880 census was taken. According to descendants, Mattie died while sitting at her spinning wheel, a cup of coffee by her side. She was found by a neighbor who stopped in to see her.

Mattie was born on Horsepen Mountain, the daughter of Thomas Smith, who was the stepson of Ephraim "Eph of All" Hatfield. Thomas Smith was a half-brother of Joseph and Valentine Hatfield, patriarchs of the Hatfield families in Logan and Mingo counties, West Virginia.
