Gerharda Johanna Lievers was born in Haart, the municipality of Aalten, in the province of Gelderland, NL to parents Hendrik Lievers (born July 18, 1888) and Jansjen (Jenny) Lievers (born February 14, 1891). Hendrik Lievers was persuaded to come to Canada after hearing it was a country of milk and honey. The family emigrated from Haart, Aalten, Gelderland, Netherlands on April 15, 1913. Their destination was Edmonton, Alberta where Hendrik's brother Ben was already living. But during the Great War years, Hendrik joined a group wanting to form a Dutch settlement in Engen, B.C. and moved his family there. This settlement was not a success, and the Lievers family would move to a number of different places in B.C., before settling in Neerlandia, Alberta in 1920.
