Leroy Gatlin was born at French Camp, MS, the first child of Aubrey Elijah and Ida Lou Boyd Gatlin. He attended public school at French Camp and graduated from Madison-Ridgeland High School at Madison, MS, in 1956. He attended Mississippi State University for one year and graduated from Belhaven College in Jackson, MS. He was an aspiring Christian agricultrual missionary in Brazil when he drowned there in a remote section of the Araguaia River. His body was not recovered, but a memorial monument stands near the graves of his parents.
