Ida Lou Boyd was born Nov. 19, 1908, at Poplar Creek, MS. She was the daughter of Walter Gray and Lillian Cartledge Boyd. Ida Lou graduated from French Camp Academy and Mississippi Synodical College (Holly Springs, MS). She was a public school teacher early in her adult life but later worked full time in her home rearing four children: Aubrey Leroy, Dorothy, Boyd, and Jonathan. Their second child, Virginia Ann, died in infancy. A vibrant and cheerful woman with strong Presbyterian faith and an insatiable appetite for hard work, Ida Lou suffered the heartbreak of losing her first born , Aubrey Leroy, to an accidental drowning in Brazil in 1961. He was only 23 years old and was an aspiring Christian agricultural missionary. No body was recovered. She outlived her husband Aubrey Elijah Gatlin by nearly 20 years. She suffered from Alzheimer's disease during the last few years of her life and succumbed to its ravages in 1990 at nearly 82 years of age.
