Wife of Dennis
Margaret Mulholland departed this life at the old homestead Dec. 4, 1892. She was a native of Tyrone Ireland. She was born in 1818 and came to this country in her youth. She married Dennis Mulholland, and for several years lived in St. Louis and from there moved to Alamakee county Ia. About 1865 she, with her husband moved to this county, purchasing one of the earliest selected farms in the county being in the South-east corner of Lake Township. Mr. Mulholland for a time after locating in the county frequently spent months working in the iron mills leaving the deceased to look after the home and with the boys till the few acres then in cultivation. At the time of their locating on the north Lizard all supplies for the settlements on the Little Sioux at Sioux Rapids, Peterson, Gillett’s grove and even as far north as Spencer were hauled over from Fort Dodge, Mulholland’s was on the way and here many a weary traveler to and from the Sioux found shelter and hospitable entertainment. The old Sioux trail has long since been plowed up or has grown up with grass. Mr. Mulholland died about twenty years ago from an accident in attempting to bury a large boulder. Mrs. M. now follows him. She leaves four sons and one daughter to call her blessed. She was well fitted to be the wife of a pioneer settler. A faithful wife, a kind mother, a generous neighbor, has passed away. The writer has often enjoyed the hospitality of their home and for several months taught the older boys and Miss Mary, the only daughter. Twenty-six years has passed since then and thinned out many of the old settlers. They are dropping one by one like autumn leaves, leaving behind them pleasant memories. The deceased was a devout Catholic. Her mortal remains were followed to the cemetery at the Lizard church by a large concourse of sorrowing friends and neighbors. Rev. Father Sullivan of Gilmore City, her pastor, was assisted in the last sad rites by Rev. Father Darcy and Carroll. (Rolfe Reveille, Rolfe, IA, December 15, 1892)
