Arthur William Aiken, Sr., 90, of Brevard passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on August 27, 2012.
Arthur was born February 22, 1922 in the Old Toxaway community. After joining the U.S. Army, he met and married the late Daisy Hartley Aiken from Blowing Rock, N.C. Arthur and Daisy had five children. Preceding him in death are his wife Daisy Hartley Aiken and his second wife Dollie Robinson and two children, Jean Aiken Crane and Harold Edward Aiken. He is survived by Arthur Aiken, Jr. and wife Wanda, Christine Aiken Fisher and husband Charles, and Joyce Aiken Greene and husband Stan all of Brevard. He has eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
According to family history, Arthur is believed to have been the oldest Aiken born in Transylvania County. He is the son of the late Richmond Pierce and Rozella Meece Aiken. He has 10 brothers and sisters including: Rev. Ray Aiken, Earl Aiken, Paul Aiken, Dorene Aiken Byers and Donald Aiken. He is preceded in death by four of his siblings: Osa Aiken Whitmire, Beulah May Aiken, Myrtle Aiken Owens, Howard Aiken and Leo Aiken.
Arthur worked at Harold's Supermarket in Brevard and retired from Dupont. Arthur was ordained as a Baptist minister. He has been an active member of the Baptist community in Transylvania County serving in various churches throughout the years. He was a member of Old Toxaway Baptist Church, but most recently attended Midway Bible Baptist Church in Brevard.
Arthur has his family and many he touched in the community with strong belief in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ that will sustain us till we meet again. His greatest legacy, according to his children and grandchildren, is the example of his faith. One of Arthur's granddaughters had this to say, "Our Poppa has always been a wonderful example to all of us. He has loved his wife and family with a constant, steady devotion and showed us all the importance of family. His walk with the Lord has been the guiding force in his life and has allowed us all to see God's mercy and grace first hand. We are a stronger family for having him guide us all these precious years."
The family is asking in lieu of flowers that donations be made to Midway Bible Baptist Church Building Fund.
Services for Mr. Aiken will be visitation from 2-4 p.m. Thursday, August 30, 2012 at Moody Connolly Funeral Home in Brevard. Memorial service will held immediately following in the Moody Connolly Funeral Home Chapel at 4 p.m. officiated by Rev. Allen Aiken. A private, family burial will take place at Old Toxaway Baptist Church cemetery.
