Inscription on stone: "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes," which is from the Book of Revelation, chapter 21, verse 4: "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away."

Elisabeth Briggs was the wife of William Lindsay (c.1777-1841) and the mother of eight children, the first born being Guilianna L. Lindsay (1807-1885) Mrs. Elswick S. Field, my 3rd great grandmother.

The name on the stone is spelled "Elisabeth." She and William Lindsay were married in Stokes County, NC on February 17, 1807. I expect she may have been a daugter of Robert Briggs, who appears on the 1790 census of Stokes Co., and his wife Ann, who appears in the 1800 census there. After William Lindsay's death in 1841, sometime before the 1850 census, Elisabeth appears to have returned to Stokes County, which became Forsyth County after 1849. She appears in the Forsyth County census records in 1850, 1860 & 1870. In 1850, she was living in the household of her son-in-law, William Penn Henley, who had married her daughter Sarah S. Lindsay. Also in the house was a widowed daughter, Amanda P. Lindsay Ross. In 1870, she was living with her son, Dr. Andrew D. Lindsay.

Elisabeth Briggs and William Lindsay had the following children: Guilianna L. Lindsay (Dec. 30, 1807-March 29, 1885, m. Elswick S. Field in 1831, 8 children), William Pinkney Lindsay(c.1809-1880, m. Charity Beeson, 6 children in the 1850 census); Dr. Robert C. Lindsay (1811-1868, m. Emily P. Doak, at least 8 children); Nancy Lavinia Lindsay (c.1813-1854, m. Milton H. Saunders in 1833, at least 4, possibly 6, children); John Henry Lindsay (1816-1906, m. Lucy Ann Bell in 1848, went to Texas); Amanda P. Lindsay (1820-1884, married first James N. Ross, then Joseph Armfield, at least 3 children); Sarah Sabina Lindsay (1822-1910, m. William Penn Henley, at least 4 children); Dr. Andrew David Lindsay (1829-1892, md. 1st Emma C. McGee, 2 children, 2nd. Arcelia Kerner, at least 1 child.)

Elisabeth Briggs Lindsay probably died in Kernersville, surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was buried next to her husband at the old Lindsay plantation on Deep River, in Guilford County, only about 6 miles away.
