a committed and accomplished educator, returned Home to be with her God on June 30, 2012. A native New Orleanian who lived for brief stints in Detroit, Michigan, Los Angeles, California, and Cincinnati Ohio, Delores was a proud product of Lafon Elementary and McDonough 35 High School. There was little that brought her more pride than being a graduate of Xavier University where she earned a degree in Elementary Education. She would subsequently pursue and complete a Masters Degree in Education with an emphasis in Curriculum and Instruction. At some point during her early working years, Delores was a licensed practical nurse who took great pride in taking care of those who were in need of healing. While it was evident that she enjoyed nursing, her real passion would be in teaching children. During her professional career, she loved and challenged children at McDonough 36, William J. Guste Elementary, Stuart Elementary in Princeton, Ohio, and Harold Keller Elementary (formerly James Madison) in Metairie. Because of her mastery of the profession, she was instrumental in piloting Jefferson Parish's Instructional Associate Program which was designed to mentor new teachers. This expertise was recognized beyond Louisiana when she was asked to train a group of newly minted Teach for America instructors in Northern California. In the years immediately preceding her retirement, Delores worked in Central Office for the Jefferson Parish School Board as a recruiter who was instrumental in recruiting, hiring, and placing new teachers. After her retirement, she remained active in the field by working for the State of Louisiana's teacher evaluation program. Those who knew her were aware that Delores Arthur had a melodius singing voice. A soprano with a trained operatic voice, she was often invited to sing at churches across the city. When asked to reflect upon her experiences as a singer, she would smile broadly and remind us that she was one of the very first African-Americans to sing on the stage at Loyola University in Carmen.
