On 30 Jul 1862 Frederick, a farmer, mustered into service with the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, being credited to the quota of Grafton, Worcester County, Massachusetts. He was 17 years, 6 months and 23 days old.
On 27 Jul 1864 Frederick was transfered to the 20th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.
On 24 Aug 1864 in the "Worcester Spy," Frederick was reported among the prisoners, for a total of four commissioned officers and seventy-seven enlisted men.
On 10 Mar 1869 his twin brother, Franklin Whitney, died at Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts, of a wound received in the Army, while serving with Company A, 34th Massachusetts Infantry at age 24.
On 7 Aug 1870 Frederick, 25, married Mary L. Gardner, 20, daughter of Joseph and Mary (Connelly) Gardner, at Boston, Suffolk County, MA, in a first marriage for both. They had at least four children.
Frederick Whitney died on 24 Sep 1938. He was 93 years, 8 months and 17 days old.
Note: As of research in April 2012, Frederick has the distinction of being the last known surviving member of the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry when he died in 1938.
