Adam Couse was the husband of Margaret L. Couse.

He was a dance instructor from Pittsburgh, who knew Stephen Foster's family. He opened the first music store in Detroit in 1844. In 1850, Stepehin Foster dedicate his ballad, "The Voice of Days Gone By," to Adam Couse. He turned his music store over to his assistants in 1854 and began dealing exclusively in pianos.

Adam Couse was also th composer of "Detroit Schottische," a very popular tune in its day. Per American Philosophy from Rudi Thoemmes Rare Books, it is still around as an old-time fiddle tune more often called "Flop Eared Mule." About 30 years later, Couse published his philosophical The New Philosophy of Being and Existence (1883). His philosophy was not well received and was quickly dismissed.
