Daniel was the son of John and Lydia Heckert Woland. On Nov. 3, 1872 at Coaldale, PA, he married Adaline Messner, the daughter of George Washington Messner and Catharine Roe Messner. Daniel was an anthracite coal miner who died from burns received in a mining accident at the Short Mountain Colliery, leaving a wife and 5 children. The mining company gave no compensation to his widow because Daniel was volunteering along with 12 other miners as they attempted to deal with a gas problem.

ACCIDENT AT LYKENS, Death of One of the Victims and the Condition of the Others. Coroner Shindler went to Lykens yesterday to hold an inquest on the body of Daniel Woland, one of the victims of the explosion at the Short Mountain mine. A jury was impaneled and after viewing the body adjourned to meet when the witnesses, who are all more or less injured, are able to testify. Of the thirteen who were burned Daniel Buffington is in a precarious condition and may not recover. James Bateman, the foreman, is also terribly burned about the face and hands. He will recover, however. The others burned were Coradock Edwards, Anthony Fisher, Chas. M. Hoover, Ernest Shindler, Chas. Gaffney, Joseph Rasbatcb, John Cook, Joshua Evans and Chas. Brittan. They are doing quite well. The dead man leaves a wife and six children in poor circumstances. He was 35 years old. His funeral will take place tomorrow. The coal company is taking good care of the injured men.
