Joe Miersma, age 82, of Hull died Tuesday, Feb. 20, at the Valley Manor in Rock Valley.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Feb. 23, at the First Reformed Church in Hull. The Rev. David Ter Beest and the Rev. Harold Lenters officiated. Interment followed at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. Kraai-Oolman Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Joe was born Jan. 27, 1914, at Hull, the son of Harry and Hattie (Te Slaa) Miersma. He was raised in Hull.

On Feb. 16, 1934, he married Wilma Kroese at Hull. Except for two years at Rock Rapids, they made their home at Hull. Joe owned and operated Miersma Hatchery and Produce for many years.

In retirement, he drove a school bus for the Boyden-Hull Community Schools. Mrs. Miersma died Aug. 14, 1989, in Rock Valley.

In September 1991, Mr. Miersma became a resident of the Valley Manor.

He was a member of the First Reformed Church where he had served on the consistory as an elder and a deacon and had been church treasurer for 25 years. In earlier years, he served on the Hull Public School Board of Education.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Hester and Lauren Bolks, of Chandler, Ariz.; five grandchildren, Brent Brunsting, Lisa Brunsting, Scott Brunsting, Todd Bolks, and Sheila Hutchinson; three greatgrandchildren, Shara, Andrew, and Tyler Brunsting; two brothers,
Henry of Artesia Calif., and Ed of Bellflower, Calif.; and a sister, Margaret Pollema, of Hull.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley Brunsting, and two brothers, Wilmer and Gerrit.
