Civil War Union Soldier. He was enrolled in the 27th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on September 3, 1862, and was mustered in as a Corporal in Company A on September 19, 1862. He served through the December 1862 Fredericksburg Campaign, and his regiment's Spring 1863 occupation and garrison operations in Kentucky and Tennessee, and was honorably mustered out on July 2, 1863.

He then enlisted in the 2nd New Jersey Volunteer Cavalry, being mustered in as a Private in Company M on September 9, 1864. Transferred to Company H, he served through the end of the war, and was honorably discharged at Vicksburg, Mississippi on June 29, 1865.

On March 22, 1892 he filed for a United States Army Veterans Pension (Application #1131548, Certificate #924002).

On August 21, 1919 his wife, Phebe A. Allen, filed for a United States Army Widow's Pension (Application #1145376, Certificate #884416).
