Peder Jensen was born in Vissenbjerg Parish, Odense, Denmark, on May 1, 1840, one of 12 children born to Jens Jensen Beck and Karen Jensdatter. In 1862, Peder enlisted in the Danish army to serve the required four and one-half year term. His time in the service included the brief war between Denmark and Germany in 1864.

Peder was a mason by trade and after completing his military service he made his home in Gjelsted Parish, a few miles west of his childhood home. On April 3, 1869 Peder was married to Mette Kirstine Hansen in Husby, a nearby parish. They made their home in Gjelsted and over the next 16 years had eight children - two sons and six daughters. In the early 1880’s they moved from Gjelsted to Kavslunde Parish.

Peder’s four oldest children, Gjertrude, Dorothea, Hansine and Hans emigrated to United States between 1889 and 1891. In January of 1892 Peder and Mette followed, arriving in New York aboard the steamship “Siberian” on February 5, 1892, with their four younger children. They settled in north-central Iowa, living for a time on a farm near Swaledale, Iowa.

In 1905 Peder and Mette moved to Plainview, Nebraska, where their daughter Anna and her husband were living. Mette died at Plainview on March 3, 1927. Peder was Plainview’s oldest resident when he died at his daughter’s home there on January 18, 1936. His funeral was held at the Methodist church in Plainview, with interment in the Danish cemetery west of Plainview.

Peder was survived by five daughters, Gjertrude Marie (Petersen), Hansine Karoline (Ytzen), Maren Sophie (Jorgensen), Anna Johanne (Jensen) and Amelia Rasmine (Pedersen); two sons, Hans Kristjan and Jens Peder; 42 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife and a daughter, Dorothea Kirstine (Jacobsen).
