Mae Frances Thomas, known to many as the matriarch of the Greenville’s “famous football family” died Saturday at Presbyterian Hospital of Greenville.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Bethlehem Baptist Church of Greenville with Rev. O.B. Winkley Jr. officiating. Burial will be in East Mount Cemetery.

In the 1960s and 1970s, three of her sons gained statewide recognition as football stars in Greenville schools and in college and all went on to professional careers. Jimmy played for the San Francisco 49ers, Earl for the Chicago Bears and Mike for the Washington Redskins where he was Rookie of the Year as a running back.

Mrs. Thomas was employed at E-Systems while her children attended the local schools.

She had been a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church since 1947. She served as a youth director, president and member of the missionary society, Bible teacher and choir member.

Mrs. Thomas also served in the Greenville schools PTA at both elementary and secondary levels as president, room mother and other positions.

She was born Aug. 2, 1924, in Lone Oak to Henry Payne and Era Gibbs. She attended Lone Oak schools. She moved to Greenville and was married to Jimmy Thomas, who preceded her in death.

Survivors are four sons, Lamar Thomas of Las Vegas, Nev., Jimmy Thomas of Fort Worth and Earl Thomas and Mike Thomas of Houston; two daughters, Cecelia Thomas Barr of Greenville and Glenda Sue Venters of Duncanville; a brother, H.P. Payne of Los Angeles, Calif.; sisters Mattie R. Turner and Flora Collins of Greenville and Bessie Robertson of Los Angeles, Calif.; 18 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, a son, three sisters and one brother.

Visitation is from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Cozine & Tarver Funeral Home.
