For six seasons (1971 to 1976), he played at the tight end and wide received positions in the National Football League with the Chicago Bears, St. Louis Cardinals and Houston Oilers. Born Earl Lewis Thomas, he made his initial impression on the football field during his years at Greenville High School in Texas. He played collegiately at the University of Houston, prior to being signed by the Chicago Bears during the 6th round of the 1976 NFL Draft. He totaled 71 career regular season games and in 1974 while in a St. Louis Cardinals' uniform, he produced career highs with 34 receptions, 513 yards and 5 touchdowns. After retiring from football, he worked in the petroleum industry. He was the middle brother of the Thomas brothers (Jimmy and Mike) who all played in the NFL. He is not to be confused with the later Earl Thomas who became a star safety mainly with the Seattle Seahawks.
