John arrived in Georgia about 1859 & served in the Civil War. He returned to North Uist where he married Marion MacLean (1837-1881), returning to Georgia between his Aug. 1867 marriage and before the birth of his first child in Georgia in May 1868. Like brother Angus in #3 of the same plot, John was a hardware merchant in Atlanta. His wife Marion and three of his four children are also buried in this plot.

John & his brother Angus purchased the family cemetery plot 24 Jan 1874. In 2012, it was owned by the Knapp family, by way of John's son's marriage to Mary Knapp.
