Lois Shifflett Workman, 82, daughter of the late Alden Clarence Shifflett and Odie Mae Mouberry, died Thursday, June 21, 2012 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. She was a woman who led an extraordinary life. Her beloved husband, Norman "Buddy" Workman, preceded her in death.

Lois was a feminist long before the word was used and was a strong proponent of women's rights. She played basketball at Madison College where she graduated, married on T.V.'s "Bride and Groom", first woman Justice of the Peace, and gave knitting and piano lessons to many. She also played the piano at Brown Memorial, tutored at the Linville Prison, and substituted in the county schools. She was a Notary Public and sexton at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in McGaheysville for many years. Lois worked as a census surveyor throughout the area and was a licensed insurance agent who helped her husband establish his insurance agency. For the past 26 years, she was a star realtor and a mentor to agents at Massanutten Realty, the business that she established with her daughter. She had a passion for traveling, living life the way she chose to live.

She is survived by three children, Diane Workman Derzis and husband, Sam Hess, Cindy Workman Whitelock and husband, Chris, Norman E. "Chip" Workman II and wife, Tracy; five grandchildren, Christopher Whitelock II and wife, Kelsey, Nicholas Whitelock, Hunter Whitelock, Alexander Workman and Skylar Workman. Lois is also survived by a most special niece, Tara Shifflett Byers, special friend Debbie Huffman, niece Jaylon Akers; special sister-in-laws and traveling companions, Betty Workman and husband, Doug, and Barbara DeArmond,

Lois enjoyed people; she never met a stranger. Those who knew her were captivated by her story, her independence, loving heart and giving ways. She was often referred to as "The Cat Lady" for her other passion, feeding and neutering feral cats while maintaining her own pets, which will be sorely missed.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm, Sunday, June 24, 2012 at the St. Stephen & the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Rocky Bar of Elkton, Virginia with Rev. Stuart Wood officiating. Burial will follow at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in McGaheysville, Virginia.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 ~ 8:00 pm Saturday evening at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton.

In lieu of flowers, Lois requested that donations be made to Cats Cradle, 124 S Main Street, Harrisonburg, Virginia.
